Writing Conferences

Writing conferences can be valuable opportunities to hone your skills and network with other writers and industry professionals. Be sure to research a conference to understand what it offers. Some conferences are geared toward novice writers while others are designed for professionals. Still others are tailored specifically for one genre or another. For example, if you are interested in writing science fiction you may not get as much out of a conference that caters to romance writers.

Usually conferences offer classes or workshops. Published authors, editors, publishers, or other professionals lead the classes. Again, research the individual presenters to be sure you are enrolled in classes that will best suit you.

Conferences may offer panels that include publishers, agents, editors, or other writers. Attendees can ask specific questions. Panels offer several points of view on topics and can be a beneficial way to learn more about writing. If you are attending a conference that features a panel, you may want to prepare some questions in case you have the opportunity to interact with the panel.

Some conferences include contests for first chapters or other portions of manuscripts. Attendees can enter the contests, usually for a nominal fee. Winners may then have the opportunity to submit winning entries to publishers or editors that are attending the conference. Even if you don’t have a winning entry, the comments made by the judges will provide you with constructive feedback.

Many times simply by attending a conference where an editor is a presenter allows attendees to submit to publishers that may be closed to unsolicited manuscripts.

Networking with others in the writing field is not only valuable, but usually a highlight of attending conferences. Only other writers truly understand the high of an acceptance or the low of a rejection. Meeting other writers can lead to forming support groups or critique groups. Out of those groups can grow other writing opportunities like writing retreats or other conferences. Meeting editors and visiting with them may provide nuggets of wisdom that will help you in your writing.

As you contemplate attending different conferences, take into consideration the cost, travel, and opportunities available at the conference. Attending a writing conference may be just the kick you need to help you pursue your writing dream.
